Testing Disguise Tells With a Friend

A consenting two-player test can turn a disguise guess into a blind comparison. Learn the setup, the record sheet and the limits of a small sample.

Can two players test a disguise tell?

Yes, if one player can control the state being compared and the observer does not know it. A blind comparison is stronger than watching random players because it separates the appearance you are testing from the outcome you expect. It still does not prove a universal rule, but it can stop a lucky guess from becoming advice.

The test needs consent, a fixed observation point and a written record. It does not need a second account, a script or a private server. If the game does not let you control the state, you can still record uncontrolled observations, but label them as uncontrolled and do not present them as a controlled result.

WORKFLOW

Set up a two-player test

1

Agree on the test and a stop signal

Explain what you are testing, how long it will take and how either player can stop. Do not test on strangers who have not agreed. A stop signal is especially important if the test involves approaching another player.

Success signalBoth players can describe the test and how to end it.
2

Choose one tell and one camera position

Test motion, shadow, aura or nameplate separately. Pick a fixed observation point and record the distance and graphics settings. Testing several tells at once makes it impossible to attribute a result.

Success signalThe test has one variable and one fixed viewpoint.
3

Randomise the state and hide it

Use a coin flip or another simple method to choose the state for each round. The observer writes the guess and a confidence note before the state is revealed. The other player should not hint, move differently or change the camera.

Success signalThe guess exists in writing before the answer is known.
4

Record every round and reveal afterwards

Keep a row per round with the state, guess, confidence and any interruption. At the end, count hits and misses. Do not delete rounds because the observer was distracted; note the problem instead.

Success signalThe sheet contains both states and all rounds.

A minimal test matrix

ControlControl roundOrdinary eggNoFalse-positive rate for the tell
DisguisedDisguised roundPlayer in the tested stateNoWhether the tell appears at all

How many trials are enough?

More than a handful. A single correct guess is an anecdote, and ten rounds are still a small sample. The useful output of a short test is not a percentage that claims to be the game's rule; it is a count of hits and misses under stated conditions, plus a description of what the observer actually used.

Run rounds in more than one position and more than one lighting condition if you can. If the tell only appears when the egg is backlit, that is a condition, not a universal rule. If the observer succeeds on ordinary eggs as often as disguised ones, the tell is producing false positives.

Stop before fatigue changes the result. A tired observer who starts guessing from the score is no longer blind. Ten to twenty focused rounds with a clean record are more informative than a long session with unclear conditions, and they are easier to repeat later.

What invalidates a test

  • The observer sees the state before writing the guess.
  • Distance, camera angle or graphics settings change between rounds.
  • Only successful detections are recorded; misses are left out.
  • Another player, pet effect or server event interferes with a round.
  • The tell is changed midway through the test without restarting the record.
QUICK ANSWERS

Co-op disguise testing questions

Do I need a second account?

No. A consenting player is enough. Using extra accounts to evade game rules or to test on unwilling players is outside the scope of this guide and may violate the platform's rules.

Can I run the test alone?

Only if you can control the state and keep yourself blind to it, which is difficult. A solo test is weaker because expectation can influence what you notice. If you test alone, label the result as uncontrolled.

What should I report?

Report the number of rounds, the states compared, the hits and misses, the camera and graphics conditions, and anything that interrupted a round. Do not report a single success as a detection rate.
